Urban Nerds emerged as a new club night in March 2007, designed to combat what they perceived to be an increasingly stale Shoreditch scene. While the foundations of East London nightlife seemed well rooted in fashion and trend, the Urban Nerds decided it was time precedence was given to the sound and the DJ, and to creating good vibes; all at a healthy cost to the clubber.
The Nerds are sick of listening to ‘can’t-mix-won’t-mix DJs’ who sound like your first Now Tape Pack. What happened to the days of sourcing great records, getting that exclusive plate and loving the needle? Urban music is more than a gap-filler and while grime and dubstep seemed to have infiltrated even the most minimal of electro sets, they believe this tendency to mish-mash everything and anything serves only one purpose: helping DJs to keep-up with the ‘cool,’ furthermore diluting the underground scene.
Since March 2007, Urban Nerds has provided a new home for genres spanning grime, dubstep, hip-hop, drum ‘n’ bass, reggae and beyond at Brick Lane’s 93 Feet East; now very much their spiritual home! They pride themselves on providing DJs who know their way around a needle and who love their sound. Anyone that’s been down to Urban Nerds will tell you the best thing going is the atmosphere, which is always full of the party spirit. A mixture of great punters and great music means that the so-called aggressive nature of underground genres such as grime is broken down to produce good vibes and a crazy, far from hostile crowd who love good music.
